Austin Hsu

Austin Hsu teaches film theory in the program. As an art and film critic, his articles can be found in a broad spectrum of magazines. Mr. Hsu took the time to speak with us about his thoughts and views on the program.

Many people ask what sort of help a university education provides in finding a job, particularly in a sphere such as film making. Mr. Hsu says, “Movies are the craft of bringing people together; they are multi-faceted art form and a commercialized cultural product.” Besides program resources and a first-rate learning environment, Fu Jen also has a long-standing film club and a diverse collection of films housed in campus libraries. In addition to these learning resources, the fact that there are programs on campus in virtually any subject means that students enjoy many course options to enhance their education and develop the skills and competencies required for personal success in the film industry.

In the realm of audiovisual production, Mr. Hsu says that besides the basics of filming, editing, and sound production, faculty members are well-informed on theory and have rich experience within industry. Students get much more than technical know-how – the deep focus on cultural research also get students to foster more robust critical thinking skills.

The program’s environment is also unique in that many students already possess a fair bit of work experience. Mr. Hsu notes that with such practical experience, students have more to share and learn from one another. Courses in the curriculum require teamwork, so students who know how to delegate work, cooperate, and aren’t afraid of expressing their thoughts are particular welcome to join.

As a film critic, Mr. Hsu recommends two movies. The first, Double Vision, was a domestic Taiwanese movie from 2002, produced in partnership with Columbia Pictures. The international production team, combined with Hollywood experience, served to produce lots of local talent for the film industry, such as Leon Dai and Wei Te-sheng. Double Vision was the highest grossing domestic film that year. The other recommendation is the Woody Allen directed Café Society from 2016. While packaged as a love story, the film is imbued with love for one’s hometown, offers an up-close view of the film industry, and displays concern for the family and wider community. Filming is telling a story, and you can learn story-telling techniques from the great directors.
